追寻·焦虑·跨越——论库雷西小说《郊区佛爷》的混合身份

Pursuit, Anxiety and Transcendence: “Hybrid Identity” in Kureishi's Novel The Buddha of Suburbia

作为当代深具影响力的巴基斯坦裔英国作家,库雷西一直通过文本世界的建构来探讨移民者的身份和文化问题。本文从身份危机、身份追寻、身份焦虑和身份跨越四大维度入手,对他的代表作《郊区佛爷》中的混合身份主题进行了具体分析。研究发现,主人公克里姆经历了一段痛苦的身份探索历程,从身份的追寻、困顿焦虑,以及最后接受和跨越,最终实现了对身份与文化问题的开放性认同,冲出了对身份问题地域性归属的狭隘与偏激。主人公克里姆的心理历程一定程度上是人类文化与生存困顿的隐喻,克里姆的身份与文化探索具有普适性价值。

As an influential contemporary British writer of Pakistani descent, Kureishi has been discussing the issues of identity and culture of immigrants by constructing the textual world. Viewing from four dimensions,i, e. identity crisis, identity pursuit, identity anxiety and identity tran- scendence, this article makes a detailed analysis of the theme of “hybrid identity” in his representative novel The Buddha of Suburbia. The analysis reveals that the protago- nist, Krim,has taken a painful journey of identity-search- ing： trapped with anxiety and struggles to gain recogni- tion, and finally reaches at an acceptance of hybrid identi- ty and culture, surpassing the narrowness and extremity of the sense of belongings. The psychological journey of the protagonist Krim is, to some extent, a metaphor of the confusion of culture and living of all human beings, and the exploration of identity and culture of Krim, therefore, has universallv applicable values.
