For hundreds of years, women sailors have added beauty to the scenery along tile millenniaold Grand Canal, xvhich runs from Beijing, in North China, to Hangzhou, in East China's Zhejiang Province. Since ancient times, shipping via the canal has been a family based industry. Generally, the men have been captains of the ships, and the women have been the sailors. The women have also cooked, washed the laundry and taken care of the children. For the women, the ferries and the canal have been their whole world.
