By employing the dual task (spatial working memory task and real-world scene search task) paradigm and combining the eye-movement recording technology to divide the search process into three phases, that is initial phase, scanning phase and decision phase. The present study explored the effect of spatial working memory load on real-world scene search performance and the modulation by visual clutter and scene context. Results showed that the main effect of visual working memory load on search performance was significant, the interaction with visual clutter was also significant. Further, the spatial working memory load mainly had influence on the initial phase and decision phase of search process. In sum, the spatial working memory load reduced the search performance, and this effect was modulated by visual clutter.
