Objective To explore the reason of the negative correlation of white blood cell (WBC) count with the prognosis of patients with anapIastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) . Methods Clinical and follow-up data of 42 ATC patients at our hospital were analyzed retrospectively. The expressions of CSF1, EPO, IL-6 and IL-11 in specimens of these patients were evaluated by immunohistochemistry, and the relationships with the prognosis and WBC count of ATC patients were investigated. Results The positive rates of CSF1, EPO, IL-6 and IL-11 were 69%, 69%, 83.3% and 71.4%, respectively. The expressions of CSF1 and IL-11 were positively correlated to WBC count and negatively correlated to the prognosis of ATC patients, but the expressions of EPO and IL-6 were neither correlated to the prognosis nor to the WBC count. Conclusion The negative correlation between WBC count and the prognosis of ATC patients may be related to the secretions of CSF1 and IL-11 of ATC cells, but its exact mechanism deserved to be researched in the future.
