A Corpus-based Study of Container Metaphor on Phrasal Verbs with Out

英语短语动词由动词和小品词——介词或副词构成。尽管结构简单,但由于它的多义性一直是英语学习者的难题。小品词OUT在短语动词中应用广泛,其语义研究意义深远。根据原型理论,所有OUT的隐喻语义都是其空间基本含义的延伸,因此可以假设OUT的基本含义分为三种:射体出现在界标容器外;射体在界标内消失;射体由界标容器内部向外部的延伸。三种情况均可解释带OUT短语动词的隐喻含义,进而有助于短语动词的理解。

English phrasal verbs are composed of verbs and particles-preposition or adverb. The particle OUT is widely used in phrasal verbs and its semantic study exerts a profound influence. In accordance with the prototype theory, all the metaphorical connotations of OUT are the extensions of its spatial core mean- ing. Therefore it can be assumed that the basic meaning of OUT can be separated into three kinds.
