历代佛典文献中记载了数量颇丰的《涅槃经》灵验故事,描述了主角受持、读诵《涅槃经》而获得的各种感应,包括神通异能、往生不动国、舌烂报应、因果轮回以及诵经愈病等主题。《涅槃经》灵验故事内容上反映出当时涅槃思想的盛行,形式上运用丰富的文学手段。佛教徒们在传播和接受故事的过程中乐于受持经典,进而产生涅槃信仰,最终获得超自然的宗教体验。

A number of Mahaparinirvana- sutra miraculous stories are recorded in Buddhist classics in past dynasties. The stories describe kinds of induction from the protagonist holding,reciting the Mahaparinirvana- sutra. The inductions include the miraculous powers,to the pure land,tongue bad karma,karma rebirth and curing. The stories reflect the popularity of nirvana belief. In the form of the stories,they use abundant literary technique. Christians have supernatural religious experience,and then hold,recite Mahaparinirvana- sutra to obtain nirvana beliefs eventually.
