张谷英村总体布局依地形呈"干枝式"结构,主堂与横堂皆以天井为中心组成单元,每个单元自成庭院。村内巷道纵横,排水系统设计缜密,藏而不漏,采光、通风、防火设施完备,因其藏风得水的环境意象、血缘宗亲的村落布局、丰富而质朴的空间形态,张谷英村被誉为湘楚民居文化的"活化石"。
