This study aims to investigate Hemingway' s use of metaphors in his short story "Big Two-Hearted River" within the theoretical framework of conceptual metaphors proposed in Lakoff and Johnson (1980) and Lakoff and Turner (1989) and Kovecses (2002). The analysis shows that simple words and plain languag den beneath the surface. These metaphors suggest Nick' s adverse impact to preserve dignity and grace in fighting against mental illness. e convey metaphoric meanings so much that are hid- and pressure caused by war and his tough guy spirits to preserve dignity and grace in fighting against mental illness.
