Discussion on Wang Tong's Thought of Confucianism

王通是隋代著名的思想家,在三教并行的背景下为复兴儒学做出了不懈努力,在儒学发展史上占有重要地位。王通虽然认为三教可以融通,但重点弘扬了"周孔之道"。王通的儒学思想主要是对先儒思想的继承,如对仁、义、礼、智、信、忠、恕、孝等的阐释,但也有自己的创发,如他对"穷理尽性","人心","道心","正心"等思想的阐发,在一定意义上开启了宋明理学的先河。研究王通的儒学思想对于我们认识儒学的发展以及弘扬中国传统美德具有重要意义。

Wang Tong,who has made unremitting efforts to revive Confucianism against the backdrop of three existing religions,namely Confucianism,Buddhism and Taoism,is a famous thinker in the Sui Dynasty. Wang Tong plays an important role in the development of Confucianism. Though Wang Tong agrees that the three religions can develop harmoniously,he emphasizes on promoting＂the Duke Zhou and Confucius’ s doctrine＂. Wang Tong’s Confucianism is mainly inherited from the ancient Confucianists,for example,his elaboration on benevolence,righteousness,etiquette,wisdom,trust,loyalty,forgiveness and filial piety,but he also has created his own thoughts,for example,his elaboration on ＂exploring thoroughly the things’ law and human’s intrinsic characters＂,＂the people’s will＂. ＂natural law＂,＂uprightness＂and other thoughts. In a certain sense,he has done a pioneering work for the neo-Confucianism in the following Song and Ming dynasties. Studying Wang Tong’s Confucianism thought will be of great significance for us to have a better understanding towards the development of Confucianism and carry forward traditional Chinese virtues.
