Barnsley in the north of England leads the UK in terms of sustainable district heating, through the implementation of small -/district - scale biomass heating systems. This paper investigated two bio- mass -fuelled heating systems installed in Barnsley, where pollutant monitoring and numerical simulation were carried out to evaluate combustion characteristics and overall system performance. It is found that the pollutant levels from the biomass combustion system were within the emission limits. The concentra- tions of flue gas (i. e. CO, C02, NO and particulates) from the biomass boiler were lower than the coal boiler. The successful experience in the development and operation of a series of ' mini' biomass - fu- elled district heating systems in Barnsley will provides a good reference for building and developing a new energy supply pattern in China' s rural area and newly developed town centres.
