Kissl gene has been extensively studied in reproduction physiology recently. Kisspeptins are a family of structurally related peptides encoded by the Kissl gene. Kissl is predominantly located in the arcuate nucleus and anteroventral periventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus. Kisspeptins act through binding and subsequent activation of the G protein-coupled receptor 54 (GPR54), with ability to regulate gonadotropin-releasing hormone andhence hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. Kisspeptins have emerged as important gatekeepers in reproductive maturation and function, from sexual differentiation of the brain and puberty onset to adult regulation of gonadotropin secretion and the metabolic control of fertility. The recent research progress of Kissl in the mammal reproduction regulation was reviewed in the paper.
