Mommsen and the Classical Studies in Germany

Theodor Mommsen was an important member of the Prussian Academy,a professor of Roman history at University of Rerlin.He was the person who greatly promoted classical studies and made Germany the leading country in this field.Mommen not only carried out innovating researches in the field of Roman history,especially Roman law,but also concentrated his efforts on raising funds and obtaining positions for classicists.This article discusses his contribution to German classical studies from the aspects of his research works,his organizational activities,and his teaching and training of young scholars.
