Synchronic Variations and Diachronic Development of “Don't Speak”and “Needless to Say”

三音节的"不要说"与"不用说"已逐渐由短语向虚词发展,在共时平面的句法功能及语义表达上呈现出了很多共性,但也存在着一些差异,这不仅需要分析其情态功能与篇章功能,还要在历时发展中观察它们的虚化程度,了解到类似近义成分的共时变异其实是历时发展的结果。

The tri-syllabic expressions—“don’ t speak” and“needless to say” have gradually developed from phrases into function words. While they show many similarities in syntactic functions and semantic representations at the synchronic level, there are still some differences. Thus efforts must be made not only to analyze their modali-ty and discourse functions but also to investigate their degrees of grammaticalization at the diachronic level. And it is understood that synchronic variations of these synonymic units are actually the result of their diachronic develop-ment.
