As one of the most popular novelists during the first half of the 20th century,William Somerset Maugham was well-known for his incessant travels,which promoted him to write many influential exotic literary works.To Maugham,traveling not only provides him with abundant materials for writing,but helps him to build the sense of belonging and complete his life transition.This thesis aims to analyze Maugham＇s psychological changes during his pilgrimages in light of the anthropological theory of Rites of Passage,so as to highlight the importance of traveling in his writing and growing,and provide a new perspective for the studies of William Somerset Maugham and his works.
