On June 20,2010,the Purple Grass Chorus from Japan visited the Fushun War Criminal Management Center in Liaoning Province and performed The morning-glory of Fushun,a song based on the true story about Wu Haoran,a Chinese prison official, and the Japanese war criminal Susumu Soejima. In February 1937,Susumu Soejima was drafted into the army in Japan and came to Changchun,China, serving in the Military Police Headquarters of the Kwantung Army commanded by Hideki Tojo.Susumu Soejima recalled that he did not know how many innocent Chinese civilians he had killed in the short span of less than three years. As the justice eventually prevails over the evil. The Chinese people finally won the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. In 1950,Susumu Soejima, along with the war criminals extradited from Siberia of the Soviet Union to China, was jailed in the Fushun War Criminal Management Center. These war criminals at first resisted, then admitted their guilt and showed penitence and all their felonies were exposed.According to Susumu Soejima, from then on their confessions continued and it turned out that they were forgiven. For three times in 1956,China’s Supreme People’s Procuratorate announced that1017 war criminals in Fushun and Taiyuan were given exemption from prosecution and immediate release. Before Susumu Soejima returned to Japan,Wu Haoran gave him a handful of flower seeds of morningglory, telling him, "bring the flowers instead of cold weapons when you come to China again." From that moment to his death in2007,Susumu Soejima had dedicated himself to the lasting friendship between the Chinese and Japanese peoples for 51 years.Soon after his death, according to his last wish, his wife asked a Chinese student studying in Japan to deliver back a handful of morning-glory flower seeds to the Fushun War Criminal Management Center as a gift in return.Today, the flowers of morning-glory are in full boom in Fushun,China and SagaPrefecture,Japan.
