There lived a group of people calling themselves "Bei" in Dangchang, Longnan, Gansu Province. For a long time, they think they are Tibetan because the pronunciation of Bei is very similar to "Bod", the self-claim of Tibet. But they are quite different from Tibetan in other areas in terms of language, dress and customs. Recently, some local intellectuals argued that they are the descendants of ancient Di and Qiang according to old documents, which idea is supported by the County government to develop tourism. It is the ethnic alternation caused debates on ethnic identification among villagers, intellectuals and people of various ages and the changes of Bei's traditional culture and music. Based on the fieldwork about Bei's existing music, the author tries to explore such issues as how the Bei' s music has been changed and how Bei understand the changes of their music during the reconstruction of their ethnic identity.
