From Masculinity to Femininity: The Aesthetic Orientation in the Chinese Translation of English for Science and Technology

科技英语文体重在传递和交流信息,要求准确无误,久而久之形成了科技文体文采不足的误解。而在翻译过程中,译者考虑的首要因素是翻译的准确性和客观性,以准确再现原文信息,为达目的,许多译者在翻译时尽可能地采用原文结构,甚至一味追求字对字的翻译,置译文可读性和美感度于不顾。而事实上,科技英语用词简洁,语法结构严密,逻辑性很强,无时无刻不彰显着一种阳刚之美(masculinity)。相比之下,汉语重意合,句式结构松散疏放,呈现出一种"阴柔"之美(femininity)。本文将探讨如何实现科技英语汉译中从阳刚美到阴柔美的转换,从词汇和句子两个层面探讨如何增加科技英语汉译的美感度。

English for science and technology focuses on transfer and exchange of information and requires accuracy, so over time people gradually develop a misunderstanding that scientific and technical writing lacks literary grace. In the translation process,the primary factor to consider is the accuracy and objectivity of translation. In order to achieve the purpose of accurately reproducing the original information, many translators use the original structure as far as possible, and even blindly pursue word-for-word translation, taking no account of readability and aesthetics of the translated text. But in fact, simple words and highly logical grammatical structures are used in English for science and technology, highlighting a kind of masculinity all the time. By contrast, Chinese is mainly paratactic, having loose and unconventional sentence structures and presenting a kind of femininity. This paper explores how to realize the transformation from masculinity to femininity in the Chinese translation of English for science and technology, and discusses how to enhance the beauty of the Chinese translation of English for science and technology from such two levels as words and sentences.
