林云铭有浓重的遗民情结。作为明代遗民,其思想经历了两次大的转折:明亡后向往用世,用世后愤世嫉俗;黜落后厌世愤世,继而产生了浓重的怀旧情绪。这一发展轨迹,正是始而跃跃欲试,继而屈臣下僚,终而无路可走而复归反叛或怀旧的一类遗民的成长轨迹,这也是林云铭热爱楚辞、创作《楚辞灯》的主要原因。

Lin Yunming has a strong adherent complex. As a Ming adherent, his thoughts experienced two major turning points. He yearned for an active life after the fall of Ming, after that he was cynical; he was world-weary after dismissed, then had a strong sense of nostalgia. The development track is a kind of adherent growth track that is at first he itched to try, then did not succeed in achieving his ambition, at last no way to go and return to rebel or nostalgia. This is also the main reason that Lin Yunming love Chuci and created Chuci Deng.
