Jane Eyre and Tess of the D’Urbervilles are two classic works in the world,which portray two new women in the Victorian age who lead a hard life but pursue their ideal life ceaselessly. This paper studies the causes of the different endings of the two heroines and the writing intentions of the two authors. After a brief introduction to the life of these two heroines,it turns to their different endings of life,and comes up with some reasons for the distinct ends by comparing their different circumstances. Also this paper involves the discussion of the authors’ writing intentions along with the analysis of the different periods the authors live in. In conclusion,the paper argues that it is the two heroines’ different cognition of the world,diverse family circumstances and different men they meet that cause their contrary endings.
