A Song of Everlasting Sorrow is regarded as the masterpiece of Wang Anyi, which thoroughly de- picts the glitz and elegant Shanghai. Wang Anyi uses her unique historical writing as a skeleton to prop up the whole book. This paper mainly includes three parts ： First, the author discusses the daily life of Shanghai, which is regarded as the main structure of the city＇ s history presented in an emotional and diachronic way; Second, the author describes the life of Wang Qiyao by ＂non - historical＂ writing, which is similar to the history of Shanghai and therefore, it is of profound historical significance ; Third, the author portrays the alleys in Shanghai as sym- bolic architecture so as to show the historical vicissitudes through secular life.
