Facts of the Diaoyu Islands Issue Judging from the Japanese Government Archives in 1885

琉球王国曾是独立国家,1879年日本通过"琉球处分"消灭琉球,改称"冲绳县"。有充分证据表明,钓鱼岛并不包含在曾经的琉球领土范围内。从1885年内务省"公文分录""冲绳县与清国福州之间散布之无人岛国家设置事宜"和外务省"有关帝国版图的其他文件"等档案可知,当时日本政府很清楚钓鱼岛属于清国,其后来将钓鱼岛编入日本领土是非法的。

The Ryukyu Kingdom had ever been independent until Japan formally annexed and abolished the kingdom, and incorporated the islands as Okinawa Prefecture through the so-called Ryukyu Disposal in 1879. However, adequate facts show that the Diaoyu Islands are not a part of Ryukyu. Archives from both Japanese Interior Ministry and Foreign Ministry in 1885 reveal that the then Japanese government clearly knew that the Diaoyu Islands belong to China under Qing Dynasty. So it was illegal for the Japanese government to seize the islands as Japanese territory.
