薇拉·凯瑟的地域小说从多方面批判启蒙现代性的负面后果,追寻拯救现代文明的良方,体现出审美现代性的要义。凯瑟洞悉到启蒙现代性的发展对现代社会的全面侵蚀,表达了对异化社会的担忧;她指出启蒙现代性的过度发展造成现代人的人性失衡,并认为解放自然是治愈现代文明疾病的良药,也是现代人实现精神救赎的必经之路。这些见解不仅诘问资本主义社会的合理性,还展现出艺术作品所承担的救赎功能,具有经久不衰的人文价值。
As Willa Cather＇ s regional novels criticize the negative effects of Enlightenment modernity from various aspects and seek the way to save modern civilization, they reflect the tenets of aesthetic modernity. Cather perceives that the modern society has been thoroughly eroded by the development of Enlightenment modernity and expresses her worries about the alienated society. She points out that the excessive development of Enlightenment modernity has led to the unbalanced hu- manity of modern men. Besides, Cather proposes that the liberation of nature not only offers a cure for modern civilization but also provides a way for modern men to realize spiritual redemption. Those ideas, by pulling into question the rationale of bourgeois society and highlighting the redemptive function of artistic works, thereby have everlasting humanistic values.
