This paper, with metaphor production test, attempts to investigate the novel metaphor pruduction features of 575 Chinese English learners. The resutls indicate : ( 1 ) most of the novel metaphor produced are the nouns referring to the bas- ic categories of concerete objects; (2) the source domain objects of novel metaphor produced are characterized with system- atic nature and variety; (3) The novel metaphor selection is strongly infuleced by the prominent features of objects; (4) the"ad hoc categories'of the novel metaphor productions results are contradicted with the conventional conceptual catego- ries ; (5) novel metaphor productions results support the embodied philosophy of cognitive linguistics. The research resutls didn' t provide any evidence to support the view that "the metaphor production competence of Chinese English learners is inefficient" from previous researchers.
