Due to the political situation and cultural tradition, the occult became popular in the 12 th century Byzantine Empire. The Byzantine occult inherited directly its essence from ancient Greek and Roman occult,reflected national traits by combining itself with contemporary social realities,and demonstrated strong intellectual features and its attachment to the Orthodox Church. The occult of 12 th century Byzantium was utilized by both secular and religious powers to play a positive role in stabilization and consolidation, thus functioning as a vital instrument in the Byzantine political life.
