There has long been the aesthetic distance of ＂difference and repetition＂between the historical context for the birth of W. Shakespeare＇s play The Tempest and its comprehension by readers of different eras,because its comprehension perspective and meaning can vary with time. This paper attempts to analyze the social change and damages to natural ecology on the barren island brought about by the intelligence and ＂magic＂of Prospero,the protagonist in The Tempest. Given the global impact of The Tempest,efforts should be made to highlight its practical significance by placing it in the context of the ecological criticism.
