Objective:To test and determine the amount of various kinds of trace elements in the three kinds of original traditional Chinese medicine (Ginseng, Codonopsis, Chinese Angelica) and in the decoction of that three kinds of traditional Chinese medicine; and make a research on the amount of different trace elements in traditional Chinese medicine that can tonify Qi as well as in the decoction of traditional Chinese medicine with a view to do a preliminary study on the relationship between trace elements and tonic herbs. Methods: Measure the amount of four elements (zinc, magnesium, manganese, copper)in Ginseng, Codonopsis, Chinese Angelica? by using flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Results:Among the 4 essential elements (zinc, magnesium, manganese, and copper) for human body in the three kinds of tonic Chinese medicine, the amount of Mg is highest, followed by Mn and Zn, Cu the lowest. Chinese angelica contents the highest amount of magnesium and zinc; Ginseng contents the highest amount of copper and manganese. Overall, the decocting rate of elements in the traditional Chinese medicines is low; the highest for Angelica manganese is only 29.17 %, the lowest for Ginseng zinc, 10.31%. Conclusion: The decocting rate of traditional decocting method is low. The content of Magnesium is high, and that of copper is low while the ratio of copper and zinc is low, which may be the characteristics of the tonic traditional Chinese medicine.
