语篇隐喻的体现形式

An Exploration of Realization of Textual Metaphor

文章基于Halliday和Martin的语法隐喻观,通过讨论Halliday&Hasan(1976)定义、分类的英语动词省略句法特征,进一步阐释语篇隐喻体现形式。由于Martin和Halliday对衔接有不同理解,继而对动词省略有不同看法,因此文章把动词省略归类为如下表面矛盾但其实不然的语篇隐喻:内部连接关系和协商结构。该研究不但探析了Martin语篇隐喻体现形式,而且增加了有关语法隐喻体现形式的精密度(delicacy)。

In Systemic Functional Linguistics,grammatical metaphor is defined as a variation in the expression of a given meaning,but the selected metaphorical expression adds further semantic features（ Halliday 1994： 342）. Grammatical metaphor＂is sensitive to metafunction and it is possible to recognize different types of metaphors according to the kinds of meaning they interface＂,therefore,it can be divided into three types： ideational,interpersonal,and textual（ Martin 1992：406）. Based on Halliday＇s and Martin＇s views of grammatical metaphor,this paper explores the realization of textual metaphor through focusing on English verbal ellipsis defined by Halliday Hasan（ 1976）. It finds that verbal ellipsis is a realization of textual metaphor. According to Halliday Hasan（ ibid.）,this study categorizes the ellipsis as a subtype of textual metaphor： internal conjunction. However,according to Martin＇s（ 1992） view of discourse semantics,the ellipsis is categorized as negotiating structure,a subtype of textual metaphor. This paper＇s double categorizations of verbal ellipsis seem to be contradictory; actually such a conclusion is based on Halliday＇s and Martin＇s different views of cohesion,especially views of verbal ellipsis. The status of this study is thus justified not only in the exploration of textual metaphor realization,but also in the context of theorizing delicacy of grammatical metaphor.
