The workshop of Power and Belief in Early Civilizations was held at the School of Archaeology and Museology, Peking University, on June 13, 2015. It was one of the academic activities of"Power in Things: New Perspectives on Liangzhu", the special exhibition of the Arthur M. Sackler Museum of Art and Archaeology, Peking University. More than 20 scholars from different academic and research institutions in China attended the workshop and conducted discussions on the following topics: new archaeological discoveries of Liangzhu Archaeological Sites and Liangzhu Culture; the nature and operating mechanism of the Liangzhu society; the relations between Liangzhu Culture and the other archaeological cultures; theories and methods adopted in studying the origins and early stages of Chinese civilization. Taking a social studies perspective, the workshop tried to describe archaeological material heritage by borrowing concepts and ideas from historical and political studies. The exhibition itself also adopted a sociology and history perspective in exhibiting the material culture of archaeology with a reflection of the progress and development of the archaeology discipline.
