On Disintegration in Doris Lessing's The Summer before the Dark

Influenced by R. D. Laing, Doris Lessing holds the view that personal psychic breakdown is inevitable in the disintegrating and chaotic contemporary world, while breakdown or disintegration itself is a healing process, during which modern men could go through conscious breakdown and even insanity to achieve a certain degree of integrity. Focusing upon the psychic disintegration of Kate Brown in The Summer before the Dark （1973）, this paper examines the indications of Kate＇s breakdown, Kate＇s outer and inner journey and awareness of breakdown, and the process of Kate＇s experiencing further conscious breakdown to achieve eventual wholeness. Lessing＇s concern about personal breakdown indicates her sincere humane consciousness and strong sense of social morality.
