This paper explores the impact of clue encoding and retrieval interval on EFL learners' meta-comprehension monitoring accuracy under segmented delay and instant judgment conditions. 60 first-year English majors participated in the experiment. The results indicate that the time interval for clue encoding and retrieval had significant effect on accuracy of meta-comprehension monitoring in ELF reading, and this effect was manipulated by different reading levels. The above findings verify the role played by external conditions of clue processing and reading competence in EFL meta-comprehension monitoring.
