Levov, the protagonist of American Pastoral,is usually viewed by scholars as an example of a failed pursuer of the American Dream. By putting ethnic issues within the context of American history, this paper returns American Dream to its phenomenological appearance and shows Levov's predicament when practicing the trope of American myth. In so doing, the paper offers an interpretation of Roth's examination of identity and humanity and illustrates how Roth challenges homogeneity presupposed in the American identity by Sacvan Bercovitch.
