＂Invisible Bullets＂ is arguably Greenblatt＇s most important new historicist practice. However, the insights and blindness in his critical assumptions and methodology have not been adequately dis- cussed. This essay thus attempts to rethink Greenblatt＇s new historicism through ＂Invisible Bullets＂ both theoretically and practically. On the one hand, it clarifies the subversion/containment mode he pro- posed in relation to each other, to the dynamics of power, and to the conflict in renaissance culture~ on the other hand, it reexamines the anecdotism Greenblatt used to present his arguments to determine its validity and reveal its blindness. Thus we will be in a better position to assess the legacy of new histori- cism in a time of paradigm shift.
