Experiment and Creativity: On Narrative Art in Willa Cather's Sapphira and the Slave Girl

薇拉·凯瑟最后一部小说《莎菲拉和女奴》以其独特新颖的叙述艺术而独树一帜。从叙事学的角度对小说进行文本细读,认为凯瑟通过叙事视角转换、多重叙事方法、叙事空白的使用将自己的个人经验和审美观念融进小说,模糊了叙事的虚构性和现实的真实性,使作品游离在真实和虚构之间,大大丰富了小说的主题内涵,反映了作者对小说形式的实验与创新,赋予了作品的现代主义特征。

Willa Cather＇ s last novel Sapphira and the Slave Girl forms a distinctive style for its unique and original narrative art. From the perspective of narratology, this paper studies the novel and concludes that Cather merges her personal experience and aesthetic value into her novel by using narrative perspective conversion, multiple narrative techniques, and narrative blank. As a result, the distinction between fictional narrative and reality is often blurred which makes the works interweave fiction with reality, highlighting the connotations of the theme. It reflects the author＇s experiment and creativity on the form of novel, embodying the modernistic features in her works.
