论何焯对柳文的批评

He Zhuo's Comments on Liu Zongyuan's Ancient Chinese Prose

何焯很关注柳宗元的古文,对柳文有很多评论。但何焯对柳文基本持贬抑态度。何焯对柳文之"道",颇有疵议,认为柳文之"道"不合圣人之旨。同时,他以"雅"、"洁"的标准来批驳柳文之"文",认为柳文不"雅"、"少味"、不含蓄,需要删削。何焯对柳文的批评解读虽有不透彻且极为苛刻武断之处,但其对清代雅正的古文规范的建立、对方苞及桐城后学的文论产生重要影响,引领了桐城派文论的发展。

He Zhuo paid much attention to Liu Zongyuan's ancient Chinese prose and took a lot of comments on Liu's writings. But He Zhuo took negative attitudes to Liu's writings. He criticized the 'Dao'of Liu's writings for its not being in accord with the essence of the Confucian classics. Meanwhile, He Zhuo refuted Liu's writings because of being not elegant and concise, and he thought Liu's writings should be cutting out unnecessary details. He Zhuo's critical attitude to Liu's writings help to establish the classic creating concept for ancient Chinese prose, which had led the development of the literary theory of Tongcheng School.
