在八年抗战中,以美国为首的部分西方人士曾经冲破日军与国民党政府的封锁,到延安以及华北敌后根据地考察中共抗日的状况。这些人有记者、民间人士、特别是战争后期美军观察组的情报人员。他们在美国档案馆留下了大批有关史中共游击战的历史文献。出于对于美英系统的同盟国反轴心国的共同目标,这些意识形态、政治背景、职业各异的西方人士,对中共抗日尽可能地作了客观描述。站在第三者的立场,这些超脱国共两党之争的即时报道为我们的敌后抗战留下了珍贵记载。

During the eight years of the anti-Japanese war, westerners, especially Americans, broke the blockage of both the Japanese and the Nationalists armies, went to Yah＇an and other anti-Japanese base areas in North China. These visitors were journalists, private citizens, and especially military intelligence officers as members of the American Military Observer Group in the later years of the war. United under the same goal-fighting against the Axis, these westerners tried their best to describe the communist resistance despite their ideological, political, and professional differences. As the third party beyond the nationalist and communist conflict, they gave on-spot reports which provide precious records for the study of the history of the communist resistance in enemy rear.
