On the Political Participation of the British Chinese in the 21st Century

21世纪英国华人的政治参与经历了从"沉默一族"到"地方议会议员"、再到"下议院议员"的上升发展历程,体现出鲜明的英国出生的二代华人(BBC)高素质以及社会融入度高的特质。这表明华裔候选人已成为英国主要政党的重要精英阶层的组成部分,也显示出与华人参政组织——"华人参政计划"及其有效的政治活动的重要作用。未来英国华人参政的热情还将持续高涨,英国下议院中也将涌现出更多的华人政治家,但英国华人欲取得美国华人在政坛上所取得的成就,依然是任重而道远。

The political participation of the Chinese people in the UK has experienced great changes.At the beginning,few British Chinese showed interest in political participation and they were regarded as the ' silent group'.Gradually,the Chinese people in the UK won seats in local councils and at last in the House of Commons in the 21 st Century.The political participation by the Chinese group in the UK in the 21 st Century has demonstrated the following features.Firstly,the second generation of the Chinese born in the UK( 'BBC') has been well-educated and fully integrated into the local community.Secondly,the Chinese candidates have become one part of the elites of the major political parties in the UK.Thirdly,the Chinese group in the UK has established close relations and made effective political interaction with the 'Chinese Political Participation Plan',the organization for British Chinese ' political participation.In the future,the Chinese people' s enthusiasm about participating in the political life in the UK will continue to upsurge and more and more Chinese members will enter the House of Commons.However,it's still a long way for the Chinese group to achieve such brilliant achievements in the political arena as that in the US.
