梅尧臣诗歌的体裁分布极具特点:五言古诗最多,五言律诗次之。前期五律比例大,后期五古比例大。七言诗相对较少,仅占总量的四分之一,且多集中在后期。五律适合梅尧臣的才性,是其成功进军诗坛的体裁;五古更符合他的性格和兴趣,是其用力最多、赖以安身立命的体裁;七言诗是他成名之后用于酬唱的体裁,有利于他纠前期之偏,真正融入诗坛主流队伍之中。
