The Picture of Dorian Gray, Wilde＇s only novel, is regarded as an epitome of his aesthetic ideology, and the British Faust. The novel tells the story of a pure handsome youth Dorian, who moves continuously towards corruption, devoid of humanity and the ultimate demise under the temptation of hedonism, quite similar to the story of Adam, who is tempted by the serpent in the Gar- den of Eden to steal the forbidden fruit and is thrown to the mortal world. By way of a prototype anal- ysis, this article interprets the contradiction within the main character and the paradox between the author＇s pursuit of aestheticism and the actual moral constraints.
