Report of the Mission to Yarkand in 1873 is the product of the British Forsyth mission to Yakub Beg’s “Yatta Shahar” regime in 1873-1874. This book includes many first-hand sources collected by members of the mission. This paper, by applying the method of Historical Literature Studies, analyzed it systematically in terms of its background, the author, document sources and version, and commented on the social, economic, trade, education and other aspects in southern Xinjiang at that time. This Report is indeed one of the important, original historic documents that can lend support to the study of Xinjiang, particularly southern Xinjiang under Yakub Beg’s rule.
