Semantic Extension in Military English Translation——A Case Study of the Chinese Version of United States Transportation Command Acquisition Management

词义引申是一种常见的翻译方法,军事英语翻译中的词义引申往往是将普通词义引申为专业词义。以审校《美军运输司令部采购管理》译稿为例,通过具体分析activity、source和justification3个词的引申翻译,指出词义引申时译者要充分理解原文,具备必要的专业知识,并且掌握一定的翻译理论和技巧。

Extending the meaning of words is an indispensable translation technique in military English translation. In military translation, common English words are mostly extended to technical terms, this being illustrated by the translation of activity, source and justification in United States Transportation Command Acquisition Management. The illustration shows that translators of military English must fully understand the source text, be acquainted with certain military expertise and acquire some translation training in both theory and technique before they can apply this technique to their translation.
