A Brief Discussion on Local Functions

本文讨论"局部功能"的概念、属性与研究方法。语言系统与语言使用组成了一个连续统,分别位于连续统的两端。局部功能不直接相关于系统,而紧密关联于语境中的真实语言使用。局部功能揭示了专门语域特征性的意义和功能方式,体现为给定词汇在局部文本环境内复现的共选型式。环境与意义融为一体,不可分解。分析还表明,共选型式表达的局部功能往往具有双重性的特点。文章最后介绍了局部功能研究应采用的分析技术。

This paper discusses the concept of local function and its properties and research methods. It holds that language system and language use would better be thought of as on a continuum, each situated on an opposite end along it. The local function is not directly relevant to the system, but closely linked to the actual uses in authentic contexts. The local function reveals characteristic ways in which meanings and functions get realized, embodied in the recurrent patterns of co-selection of a given word in the local textual environment. And the environment and meaning are inseparably integrated into a whole. The analyses also indicate that the local function may tend to be of a double character. Finally the paper describes basic analytical apparatus for the study of local function.
