摘要
鸦片战争前后,林则徐冒着政治风险,设立译馆,组织搜集和编译报纸和西书,监督译文质量,为译者提供意识形态、经济和社会地位的保障,成为中国近代翻译活动赞助人的先驱。其翻译赞助活动不仅有助于国人了解"蛮夷"的历史、地理、政治、军事、法律等情况,为官方制定战略提供参考,也在保守的晚清社会开启了西学东渐的大潮。
Lin Zexu, at great political risks, initiated patronizing translation in the Late Imperial China through establishing a private translation agency, organizing edition-translation of newspapers and books published in western countries and censoring translations. His patronage offered translators ideological, economical and social status guarantee and enabled Chinese people to know about barbarians＇ history, geography, politics, laws, and military situations. Translations patronized by him served as reference for official strategies against barbarians and started the introduction of Western learning into China.
