菲利普·罗斯1991年出版的纪实作品《遗产:一个真实的故事》中,将沉重而严肃的犹太民族该如何走下去的问题换化成为一个普通犹太人家庭生活的记忆碎片。罗斯作为第三代犹太裔美国人,"犹太"这个身份烙印在他看来已经可有可无,甚至忽视,作为一个没有任何前缀的平凡无异的美国人生活。然而在父亲重病期间,他发觉其实犹太印记已潜移默化地成为自己对家的回忆,成为对父母这代虔诚的犹太裔美国人难以割舍犹太血缘的羁绊。同时,菲利普·罗斯从遗产这个视角出发,阐明犹太人在美国主流文化的侵蚀下,如何保持自身民族特性的问题。
In the nonfiction, Patrimony.. A True Story, written by Philip Milton Roth and published in 1991, the matter of how the heavy and serious Jewish nation went on was changed into an ordinary Jewish family＇s fragments of memory. As a third-generation Jewish-American, Roth had already regarded the identity, Jew, as inessential, even ignorable, and he lived as an ordinary American. However, during his father＇s illness, he found that the hint of Jewish had gradually become his memory of his homeland and the bond of his devout Jewish-Americans of his parental generation. Meanwhile, from the perspective of patrimony, Roth illustrates how the Jews keep the nation＇s own characteristics under the American mainstream cultural erosion.
