The new production of Puccini's Manon Lescaut,coproduced by the Shanghai Grand Theatre,Shanghai Opera House and the Royal Opera House,appears on stage at the Shanghai Grand Theatre this month.This work catapulted Puccini in his career,being the third opera he completed(after he Villi and Edgar).We discuss the many female protagonists in Puccini operas:from Manon to Turandot,Tosca and Madame Butterfly.
