中国象

The Chinese Elephant

在吴伟女士的文章《热议中国》中，她将中国比作一头大象。外部世界的人们多是盲人摸象，难免以偏概全。这是一个多么迷人的意象：一头中国象!事实上，在云南省的确生有中国本土的大象，尽管数量大概不超过250头。我在非洲长大．通常人们认为那里是大象的故乡。

In her article Hot Talks in China, Wu Wei introduces the idea of China as an elephant,with people groping unsatisfactorily around its several massive parts. What an enchanting2 idea： a Chinese elephant! In fact, there are indigenous3 elephants in Yunnan province, though probably fewer than 250. Having been brought up in Africa, which we think of as the home of the elephant, it is wonderful to find that these ancient beasts also survive in the land of the panda!
