在"二战"后的历史和外交实践中,澳大利亚的政治精英形成了跨越党派的中等强国认同。澳大利亚工党在几十年中建立了"中等强国外交"传统,工党领袖们直到今天仍然在努力使之发扬光大。保守党虽然没有使用"中等强国外交"来概括自己的外交路线,但正是保守党政治家首先给澳大利亚贴上了"中等强国"的标签,并对中等强国认同的形成发挥了重要的作用。同样都认同澳大利亚的中等强国身份,工党形成了以民族主义、国际主义和积极行动主义为特征的多边行为偏好,而保守党则主要将与强国结盟作为中等强国的生存之道。

In the political and diplomatic practice after the World War II, Australia＇s political elites formed a cross-partisan middle power identity. The Australian Labor Party established a ＂middle power diplomacy＂ tradition through the decades after World War II. And until today, the Labor Party leaders are still trying to carry this tradition forward. Though the Liberal Party will not use ＂middle power diplomacy＂ to characterize its foreign policy, it was the conservative politicians who first labelled Australia as a ＂middle power＂. Both identifying with Australia＇s middle power status, the Labor Party shows a behavioral preference for multilat- eralism featured by nationalism, internationalism and activism, whereas the Liberal Party focuses on alliance diplomacy as the main middle state craft.
