Market has been rapidly changing.Some paper grades are greatly suffering from the lack of demand.This kind of grades are eg.newsprint and LWC.Some paper grades like linerboard,fluting and uncoated wood free paper are in better position.Generally,it is a question of supply/demand balances.When there is lower demand than supply it tends to push prices down.In order to cope with sinking prices,productivity has to be improved.Productivity is described as output vs.input i.e.how much we have to use production factors to get certain output.Cost of production factors can be reduced either by using cheaper units(cheaper labor,cheaper raw materials) but also new technology.Technology usually reduces a number of units.But it also creates a possibility to produce products in a different way which even more reduces costs.Another possibility is to converse current production equipment to other grade which is in better supply/demand position.Again,new technology may improve competitiveness above those who already are in the market.New technology is actually a combination of process innovation,design innovation and paper making knowledge.Here some of the new technologies and new ways of working are described.Today market conditions are challenging.Only those who are ready to innovate and seek renewal will survive.New technology means new processes,new design innovation and new way to operate.It is necessary to combine these in order to reach a quantum leap in productivity and competitiveness.
