Qian Mu's Thoughts on Zhu Zi's Reading Methods

国学宗师钱穆认为,朱子读书法所揭示的读书过程依次包括"读书须先知晓那书中说了些什么"、"少读熟读,渐得趣味,到不忍舍处"、"读书广,索理精"、"读通一切书,便可无俟乎书"这四个阶段,而"虚心"则是上述四个阶段甚至全部朱子读书法之"最大精义"。钱穆的总结与概括,不仅为后人了解博大精深的朱子读书法提供了独特的视角,且为学者读书治学打开了方便之门。

Qian Mu thought Zhu Zi＇s Reading Methods mainly includes four steps： first, ＂you need to know what the book says＂; second,＂read a bit less and highly skilled as far as possible＂; third, ＂read widely and think deeply＂; fourth,＂read through so many books so that you do not need to rely on books＂. Qian Mu pointed out that ＂modesty＂is the essence of the four steps or Zhu Zi＇s Reading Methods.
