The British architect John Soane wrote a strange manuscript, Crude Hints about his house in Lincoln Inn Fields in London. Both the structure and content of the text present images of ruin and strata. Understanding Soane's preoccupation with death and regeneration of architectural language and his reference to "first principles" in the Enlightenment, this essay suggests that his Crude hints manuscript, as a mirror of the house, may embody Soane's experiment with regenerating the classical architectural language, The image of ruin may be seen as regenerating a new form of language out of its death.
