Following the approach of "Clean Urbanism", architects, urban designers landscape architects usually assume that the engineering challenges related to the provision and disposal of water need to be solved in a technical and preferably invisible way. This has disconnected the land-use from the logics of the watershed and has led to increasing floods, droughts and water pollution. "Dirty Design" on the other hand means that architects, urban designers landscape architects need to get actively involved in the design of modern water infrastructure systems as a basis for shaping urban form and meeting broader human, ecological and aesthetic objectives. By presenting two projects from China and Europe, this paper discusses how to integrate the performance of natural processes and spatial design strategies, linking engineering, ecological and urban design thinking.
